Types of Cover

The cost of your motorcycle insurance cover will differ according to the type of cover that you choose.

The Road Traffic Act requires all motorists to be insured against their liability for injuries to others (including passengers) and for damage to other persons' property resulting from use of a vehicle on a public road or in other public places. This is called Third Party Insurance. It is an offence to drive your vehicle, or allow others to drive it, whilst on the public highway without at least Third Party Only Insurance.

This covers liability for:

  • Injuries to other people, including passengers
  • Damage to other people's property

The next level up is Third Party Fire and Theft, which will also pay up to the market value of your bike if it is lost or destroyed following fire or theft. If you select a Comprehensive policy, you would normally be covered for everything that a Third Party Fire and Theft policy would cover, plus accidental damage to your own motorcycle or scooter, loss or damage to personal effects, for example theft of a helmet held in a top-box. Extras such as 'personal accident' benefits or 'medical expenses', are often included in comprehensive policies.

Help lower your premiums:

Certain factors can help lower the overall cost of your motorcycle insurance premiums.

Examples of features insurers look upon favourably when calculating your motorcycle insurance premium:

Security

Install an approved alarm and immobiliser, Data Tag or security chain. All improvements to security could help to lower your motorcycle insurance costs.

Policy excess

Change the excess you are prepared to pay on any claim to reduce the premium. With voluntary excess the more you are willing to cover yourself in the event of an accident the lower your premium.

Mileage

Check your mileage to make sure you are not paying extra for miles you are not covering on you bike. Try and work out how many miles you will genuinely cover. There are several low mileage products on the market offering reduced premiums.

Parking

Keep your bike parked in a locked garage overnight if you can - this can help reduce the premium. More than half of bike thefts occur during the night so if your bike is safely locked away it makes sense that your insurance costs will be reduced as a result.
